Possible Sounds of Early Cinema
15.05.2020
An audiovisual experiment aiming to present highlights of the Romanian silent cinema, accompanied by sound compositions authored by prolific artists on the contemporary experimental music scene.
This project proposes both revisiting the silent film archive as an artistic strategy to revive interest in the local pioneering cinema, and reconsidering the paradigm of sound accompaniment. We tried to achieve a more personal and spontaneous approach, as opposed to the classical soundtrack that supports the action and emphasizes the plot lines. The composition devised by each artist reflects their sensibility towards the emotional, narrative, and cultural content of the film, according to their own style and techniques. Assumed as a real exchange not just a juxtaposition (Philippe Franck), this approach may draw unforeseen directions for the vocabulary of experimental music and bring to the attention of the public the value of early cinema.
